Games Designers Play

The beautiful ‘stick chair’ draws inspiration from the ‘Mikado’, a European pick-up sticks game, and comprises 7 round wooden sticks placed obliquely to support the heavy piece of acrylic and creating a perfect balance. The designers at Emmanuelle Moureaux pushed the structural balance to the limits with this design and although the chair looks unbalanced, its architecture like structure was developed after many attempts to achieve an ‘unbalanced balance’. I liked the beautiful refraction effects that makes the sticks appear as if they are soaked underwater as well as the shadows cast by the sticks.
