Want to Sit on Your Sunday Paper?

Back from my traveling, I found this simple idea of a newspaper furniture line as refreshing as my travels. Inspired to extend the ephemeral life of newspapers, David Stovell’s Sunday Paper products consist of tightly rolled newspapers strapped together into stools. The pieces, inspired by bundles of newspapers left outside of shops on a Saturday night, explore the “compressed life cycle” of the material. The designer says, “[they] have a cultural and economic value, and that the same product has a different set of values by Monday morning, in that the news is old news and their value is for pulp. I wondered that if by simply repackaging, the material life cycle could be extended.”

‘Spinning a Yarn’ using Newspapers…..

Posted in design, green, product design with tags , , , , , on September 17, 2008 by anonimiss

I had earlier written about Newspaper you can Use in my earlier post. This design by Greetje van Tiem, a graduate from Design Academy Eindhoven, takes that idea even further. She has found a distinctive and creative way to recycle old newspapers that have been sitting around.

van Tiem completed a project that she calls Indruk, which turns newspapers into yarn, and although not quite the same as regular yarn, it can be spun tighter and woven into something like a mat to be nearly as durable and functional. She says that it is possible to transpose yesterday’s news into tangible memories. These newspaper threads can be woven into products like rugs, curtains and upholstery for the home, to help create a very distinguishing look.
